We just witnessed the debut of the Starship V3—the most powerful rocket ever built—and got word that the company is finally heading toward an Initial Public Offering (IPO).

Here is the latest on the historic launch and what it means for the future of space exploration.

An “Epic” Launch Despite the Fireworks

On Friday, May 22nd, SpaceX launched the 12th integrated test flight of its Starship from the Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas . But this wasn’t just another test. This was the debut of the third-generation (V3) Starship—a fully redesigned behemoth that stands 407 feet tall (124 meters) with 33 upgraded Raptor engines producing a staggering 18 million pounds of thrust .

The launch was a spectacle.

 The Super Heavy booster lifted off smoothly, carrying 20 simulated Starlink satellites into the sky. However, true to SpaceX’s “test early, fail fast, learn faster” philosophy, the flight wasn’t without its heart-stopping moments.

Shortly after separation, the booster experienced engine troubles during its return attempt and was lost, presumably crashing into the Gulf of Mexico rather than landing gracefully . The upper stage also lost an engine early in the flight, but here is the impressive part: the flight computer compensated, kept the other engines burning longer, and still put the ship on the right path .

The finale was dramatic. About an hour into the flight, Starship performed a controlled re-entry, executed a daring belly-flop maneuver, and made a targeted splashdown in the Indian Ocean . It exploded on impact (as expected), but the fact that it made it that far—deploying satellites and surviving re-entry—was a massive win.

Musk called it an "epic first Starship V3 launch & landing," adding, "You scored a goal for humanity" .

The Business Side: Going Public

While the rockets are flying, the business side is also heating up. Musk recently announced plans to take the company public . With a valuation reportedly targeting the trillions, this could be the largest IPO in history.

Why does this matter for the space nerds? Because Starship is the key to profitability. The current workhorses, the Falcon 9 rockets, continue to launch batches of Starlink satellites regularly (including a recent launch of 29 satellites from Florida) . But Starlink needs the massive capacity of Starship to scale further. If the V3 iteration proves successful, it drastically lowers the cost of sending heavy payloads to orbit.

Why This Matters for NASA and the Moon

This wasn’t just a joyride for Musk; NASA was watching closely. Starship is the chosen Human Landing System (HLS) for the Artemis program .

NASA is aiming to return astronauts to the Moon by 2028. Before that happens, Starship needs to prove it can dock in orbit, transfer fuel (a risky procedure involving multiple tanker flights), and land safely on the lunar surface . While the V3 test had glitches, it successfully demonstrated the structural integrity and control needed to move to the next phase.

As NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman (who flew in to watch the launch) put it: "One step closer to the Moon… one step closer to Mars" .

The Bottom Line

This test flight felt different from the previous ones. There were still explosions and engine failures, but for the first time, it looked like a real rocket ready for operational service rather than a prototype.

SpaceX is now in a race against time. They need to perfect orbital refueling by the end of the year  and get this ship ready for lunar missions. If they succeed, we aren't just looking at a return to the Moon—we are looking at the launchpad for Mars.
